National Park Service
Jefferson National Expansion Memorial
The National Park Service at the Gateway Arch, the Museum of Westward Expansion and the Old Courthouse are all part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in St. Louis Missouri. The Gateway Arch is a 630-foot stainless steel monument to the spirit of the western pioneers and contains a unique tram system that takes visitors to the top.
The Museum of Westward Expansion, located below the Arch, is as large as a football field, and contains an extensive collection of artifacts, mounted animal specimens, an authentic American tipi and an overview of the Lewis and Clark expedition. The Old Courthouse is one of the oldest buildings standing in St. Louis. It was there that the first of two trials of the Dred Scott case were held. The building houses a museum charting the history of St. Louis and restored courtrooms.
Over three million people visit the Park annually. The Park is open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. from Memorial Day to Labor Day. After Labor Day, the Park is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Jefferson National Expansion Memorial also provides recruitment services for the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site, which commemorates the life, military, career and Presidency of Ulysses S. Grant and his wife Julia Dent Grant. The site has five historic structures (main house, stone building, barn, chicken house and ice house).
The Park is open daily open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
