The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is an agency of the U.S.
Department of Transportation, headquartered in Washington, D.C. with
field offices in all states across the United States. We administer a multi-billion dollar Federal-aid highway program through partnerships with each of the State Departments of Transportation, local transportation agencies, metropolitan planning organizations, highway associations, private industry, academic institutions, and other Federal agencies.
Our mission is to continually improve the quality of our nation's highway system and its intermodal connections. For more than 100 years, FHWA has concentrated on building and repairing the highway infrastructure. In the last decade of the 20th century, FHWA's role expanded dramatically and is now reflected in five strategic goals: Safety, Mobility, Productivity, Human and Natural Environment, and National Security.
