U.S. Department of Commerce
Change the World Through Commerce
The U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) has a variety of student employment opportunities to accommodate student schedules. At the U.S. Department of Commerce, your talents will contribute to creating positive changes - in America and in the world. Every day we provide diverse services and opportunities that improve the lives of people everywhere.
What is the U.S. Department of Commerce?
While commonly known as the nation's business agency, we are much more. DOC creates the weather reports heard every morning; facilitates technology that Americans use daily in the workplace and home; supports the development, gathering and transmitting of information essential to competitive business; makes possible the diversity of companies and goods found in domestic and foreign marketplaces; supports environmental and economic health in diverse communities; provides the basis for estimating the gross domestic product (GDP) and leading economic indicators; and conducts the constitutionally mandated decennial census - the basis of our representative democracy.

What Student Employment Opportunities are Available?
The DOC offers both paid and unpaid (volunteer) experience. The paid experience is in the Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) formerly known as the Co-op Program and the Student Temporary Experience Program (STEP). Both programs earn sick and annual leave and provide experience to strengthen your resume and expand your job skills. Employment through the Co-op Program may lead to permanent employment upon graduation.
DOC also offers unpaid training opportunities to students in high school and college. These opportunities may provide work experience related to your academic program. The program allows you to explore career options as well as develop your personal and professional skills. As a student volunteer, you will be exposed to the various missions and responsibilities of DOC.
Where Will I work?
More than 40 percent of the positions in the DOC are located in Washington, D.C. The remainder of the positions are located in small offices throughout the continental U.S., Hawaii, and Puerto Rico.
