Scholarships for Masters Programs in Europe
Applications are being accepted for the English-language master’s program, called Masters In Earthquake Engineering and/or Engineering Seismology (MEEES), which is being conducted in Europe under the framework of the Erasmus Mundus program. The deadline is January 31, 2009. MEEES is organized by a consortium of European University/Research Institutions, led by the Centre for Post-Graduate Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (ROSE School, www.roseschool.it ) and featuring the participation of the University of Patras (Greece), the University of Grenoble Joseph Fourier (France), Imperial College London (UK), the European Joint Research Centre (EC), and the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology (Italy). Scholarships ranging in value from €14,000 to €35,000 are available to applicants from all nations. For full details on the program and the online application procedure, visit www.meees.org .

Naeim Elected to IAEE
EERI President-elect Farzad Naeim of John A. Martin & Associates was elected to represent the United States earthquake engineering community on the Board of Directors of the International Association for Earthquake Engineering (IAEE). The General Assembly of National Delegates held the election during 14WCEE (the 14th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering in China last October. Directors’ terms are four years, and they are eligible for one re-election. Established in 1963, the IAEE sponsors the quadrennial world conferences and aims to reduce global seismic risk by promoting international cooperation among scientists, engineers, and other professionals in the broad field of earthquake engineering. 15WCEE will be held in Lisbon, Portugal, in 2012.

New EERI White Paper Explores Role of Interdisciplinary Research in Earthquake Risk Reduction

Earthquake Risk Reduction: Addressing the Unmet Challenges -- The Need for an Interdisciplinary Research Approach

This 30+-page paper prepared by an EERI Working Group addresses complex vulnerabilities in earthquake risk reduction and the role that interdisciplinary research plays to improve our understanding of vulnerabilities and potential solutions. The nature of earthquake risk reduction dictates that new research opportunities and approaches be identified. The 13 recommendations offered in this paper are targeted at many audiences, including NSF and other potential funding agencies, policy makers in executive and legislative branches of various levels of government, universities and academic researchers, and professional societies that support the earthquake risk reduction community. While the paper focuses on earthquake issues, the lessons of disaster vulnerability are widely applicable to hurricanes, floods and other disasters.

New EERI Publication: Contributions of Earthquake Engineering

Contributions of Earthquake EngineeringContributions of Earthquake Engineering to Protecting Communities and Critical Infrastructure from Multihazards
This 62-page report lays out the wide-ranging contributions of earthquake engineering that enhance public safety and improve the protection of U.S. communities from hazards beyond earthquakes. Four categories are chosen to identify major contributions and present representative examples: planning, advanced technologies, emergency response, and community engagement. The goals of the report are to help the earthquake community define its role in a multihazard world with an understanding of its contributions to multihazard mitigation, and to make the general public, governmental agencies, and elected representatives and their staffs aware of the impact and value of their investments in the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP). Authors: Thomas D. O’Rourke, Thomas Holzer, Christopher Rojahn, and Kathleen Tierney.
