Poverty & Well-being

ERS researches the economic, social, and demographic factors that affect the income and poverty status of rural residents and their receipt of assistance from Federal programs, including food assistance programs. Analyses at both the family (micro) and area (macro) levels provide policymakers with a detailed picture of rural income, poverty, and welfare-program conditions.

Spotlights

Rural Poverty At A Glance—The rate of poverty is not only an important social indicator of the well-being of the least well off, but it is also widely used as an input in shaping Federal policies and targeting program benefits. This report documents large metro-nonmetro gaps when poverty is analyzed by race, ethnicity, age, and family structure.

Anatomy of Nonmetro High-Poverty Areas: Common in Plight, Distinctive in Nature—For the most part, nonmetro areas of high poverty are of long standing. This article identifies a typology of high-poverty counties that reflect racial/ethnic and regional differences in major characteristics including education, employment, and language proficiency.
