18f. Cold pressed oils

The following notes have been extracted, with the authors' permission from a series of Agnotes, most of which were developed by Ian Knox, of the Oz Rural Web site (http://www.ozrural.com), for the database of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, which can also be accessed through the NRE Web site (http://www.nre.vic.gov.au).

Product

Cold pressed vegetable oils are oils derived from a range of crops such as canola, sunflowers, flaxseed, almonds and some Australian native plants such as certain Acacia species, quandongs, Hovea spp and Native Flax (Linum marginale). This industry has arisen because of the demand for natural oil.

The combination of heat and chemical solvents usually used to extract and refine vegetable oils is believed by those who prefer natural oil to destroy essential ingredients of the natural oil such as Vitamin E, lecithin, beta carotene and the essential Omega 3 fatty acids. Cold pressed oils are extracted from seed by a simple crushing and filtering process. The residue meal is also saleable.

Marketing

This industry comprises small independent operators who have developed their own niche markets. The demand for natural products is expected to grow. Unfortunately, it is difficult to establish consistent supply.
