6. The Australian Native Bushfood Industry Committee

The Native Bushfood Industry Committee (ANBIC) held its inaugural meeting in early July. This committee is charged with the task of assessing the current status of the bushfood industry, and its size and scope, as well as identifying impediments to its growth and development.

The six members of ANBIC who were selected following extensive industry consultation are:

Initially funded by the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation, ANBIC will set priorities to accelerate growth in the value of the industry, from an estimated $15 million p.a. at present to a target value of $100 million p.a. in three years time.

Additionally it will steer proceedings towards the staging of a national native bushfood conference in early 1996, which will address issues such as standards for growing and processing the products, promotion and marketing of the concept.

An anticipated outcome of this conference is the establishment of an industry association which will take bushfoods to local and export markets underpinning them as mainstream food ingredients of our Australian food culture for the 21st century.
