West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne disease that can cause encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) in humans. It was first reported in the United States in the fall of 1999 and presents a threat to humans, horses, birds, and other vertebrates. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Division of Vector-Borne Infectious Diseases collects information on the occurrence of WNV and works to develop improved methods for disease diagnosis, surveillance, prevention, and control. For 2001, WNV surveillance activities included monitoring human, veterinary, wild bird, sentinel chicken flock, and mosquito cases. Veterinary surveillance in 2001 documented cases of WNV infection in horses; no information was collected for other nonhuman mammals. The CDC worked with the U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, State wildlife agencies, and State and local health and vector-control agencies to track the occurrence of WNV and to provide national and regional surveillance information to public health officials, elected government officials, and the public. The CDC provided the data for this map layer.
The West Nile Virus Surveillance 2001 - Veterinary Cases database shows the location of 733 equine WNV cases reported from 127 counties in 19 States. The surveillance area encompassed all 50 States and the District of Columbia. Information is presented by county and includes the total number of confirmed WNV cases, for each week and for the entire year, as well as the number of samples submitted for testing, for each week and for the entire year. Additional information on WNV is available from the CDC West Nile virus basics page.
