Pollutants/Toxics subtopics Alphabetical List of All Topics

Mercury is a naturally occurring element present throughout the environment. It can travel in air as vapor, in fish as methylmercury, and on land in its best known "quicksilver" form. In all three media, it poses a significant risk to human health and the environment. Human activities, in particular the combustion of fossil fuels and solid wastes, have increased the amount of mercury in the atmosphere, in soils, and in water bodies. EPA is taking steps to regulate mercury emissions from power plants. The Agency also sets a maximum contaminant level for mercury in drinking water and works with the states to issue consumption advisories. Finally, the EPA participates in international efforts to reduce worldwide mercury emissions through treaties and accords.

Recommended EPA Web pages

  • Mercury
Web site that teaches about mercury, and what's being done to protect human health.
  • Mercury Study Report to Congress
The Report provides an assessment of the magnitude of U.S. mercury emissions by source, the health and environmental implications of those emissions, and the availability and cost of control technologies.
