Circulars (CIR)—Purpose: To present to general or scientific audiences short summaries or articles of short-term, popular, or local interest.

Data Series (DS)—The Data Series is intended for release of basic data sets, data bases, and multimedia or motion graphics. This series can include videos, computer programs, and collections of digital photographs. (Incorporates Digital Data Series.)

Fact Sheets (FS) —Purpose: To describe WRD programs, projects, products, and water-resources topics to either a general or professional audience. Water Fact Sheets are concise and timely publications that increase the understanding and visibility of WRD activites and accomplishments.

Hydrologic Atlases (HA) —Purpose: To present reports on hydrology or geohydrology in map format to a wide range of hydrologically oriented audiences.

Open-File Reports (OFR) —Purpose: To make available (1) data reports, (2) reports of preliminary findings that would be of interest to few persons other than the cooperating agency, and (3) reports and maps pending publication elsewhere but requiring immediate release, and (4) timely information describing WRD programs, projects, products, and water-resources topics.

Professional Papers (PP) —Purpose: To present comprehensive or topical reports on any field in the earth sciences. This series is commonly used for summaries of wide popular, scientific, or geographic interest, and for significant scientific contributions--generally on topics other than hydrology.

Scientific Investigations Map (SIM) —Purpose: Scientific Investigations Maps present the scientific results of studies as maps, charts, stratigraphic sections, or other large illustrations. The map sheet or pamphlet may include additional descriptive information, photographs, or other illustrations. The series also may include collections of related maps addressing different aspects of a single geographic area or scientific topic, issued separately, or as an atlas, issued collectively in book format.

Scientific Investigations Reports (SIR) —Purpose: Scientific Investigations Reports contain significant data and interpretations of lasting scientific interest but are generally narrower in scope than Professional Papers. The series includes collections of related papers addressing different aspects of a single scientific topic, either issued as individual chapters or as a single volume; proceedings and abstracts for USGS-sponsored meetings; some field trip guidebooks and road logs; and general manuals.

Techniques and Methods (TM) —Purpose: To present to technically oriented audiences reports on methods and techniques used in collecting, analyzing, and processing hydrologic data.

Techniques of Water-Resources Investigations (TWRI) —Purpose: To present to technically oriented audiences reports on methods and techniques used in collecting, analyzing, and processing hydrologic data.

Water Data Reports (WDR) —A series of annual reports that document hydrologic data gathered from the U.S. Geological Survey's and cooperating agencies' surface- and ground-water data-collection networks in each State, Puerto Rico, and the Trust Territories. These records of streamflow, ground-water levels, and water quality provide the hydrologic information needed by State, local, and Federal agencies, and the private sector for developing and managing our Nation's land and water resources.

Water-Resources Investigations Reports (WRIR) —Purpose: To (a) present to interdisciplinary audiences comprehensive or topical interepretive reports and maps that are mainly of local or short-term interest; (b) provide a medium of release for reports and maps that would not be feasible in any other series or journal or that would be published quickly.

Water-Supply Papers (WSP)—Purpose: To present significant interpretive results of hydrologic investigations of broader than local interests.

Water Errata Sheets—Changes made to reports after publication.
