Air and Space Museum: How Things Fly Demonstrations
(walk-in, Gallery 109, How Things Fly)

Forces of Flight: (ages 6 to adult) Demonstrations focus on the basic scientific principles behind air and space flight.

Inventing the Airplane: (ages 8 to adult) Demonstrations describe the principles the Wright brothers used to design the first successful aircraft.

Paper Airplane Contest: (all ages) Explore the concept of "stability" by using paper clips to balance a paper airplane and compete against other participants.

Star Station One: (all ages) Demonstrations answer basic questions about the International Space Station.

Air and Space Museum: Discovery Stations
(For all ages)

10 different Discovery Stations are featured on varying days. These stations are hands-on interpretation centers that encourage learning through looking, discussion, and activities related to aviation, space exploration, astronomy, and planetary geology. Volunteers or museum staff offer visitors a 3-12 minute immediate, informal, and interactive experience that includes artifacts, teaching objects, games, and directed activities.

Stories and crafts for visitors 3-7 years old

Air and Space Museum: Flight Simulators: Fly or Ride!
(West Wing, Gallery 103, Simulator Gallery)

Ride Simulators: (approximately 5 min.)
Take an exciting virtual trip on board one of two simulators. Choose your adventure: Ride aboard the Space Shuttle to the International Space Station or experience the thrill of a flight in both vintage and jet-age aircraft.

Interactive Flight Simulators: (approximately 6 min.)
Try to become a jet combat "ace" -- in an F-4 Phantom II -- as you pilot the simulator into 360-degree barrel rolls. Choose either pilot or gunner responsibilities.

Admission Per Ride:
Ride Simulator: $7.00 per person
Interactive Flight Simulator: $8.00 per person
Add a Simulator: $1.00 off with the purchase of an IMAX Theater or Planetarium ticket

Air and Space Museum Udvar-Hazy Center: Discovery Stations

Air and Space Museum Udvar-Hazy Center: Donald E. Engen Observation Tower
The Observation Tower offers a view of airplanes taking off and landing at the nearby Washington Dulles International Airport.

• Access to the tower is via elevator on the first floor

Notes:
- Last elevator up to tower leaves at 4:30 PM.
- No strollers permitted on elevator.

Air and Space Museum Udvar-Hazy Center: Space Shuttle Computer Simulation
(lower level, near the classrooms)

With the help of a docent, sit at a computer screen and use interactive software and 2-way audio/video communication headsets to simulate the roles of actual engineers and astronauts on a space mission -- either at Mission Control in Houston or on the flight deck of a space shuttle.

• Limited hours; available only when staffed by docents. Confirm times at the Udvar-Hazy Center information desk.

Air and Space Museum Udvar-Hazy Center: Quick Time Virtual Reality Kiosks
(throughout the museum)

Quick Time Virtual Reality touch-screen computer kiosks provide a pilot's 360-degree view of the interiors of featured aircraft and spacecraft on display.

American Art Museum: Luce Foundation Center Activity: Scavenger Hunt
(3rd floor, west; handout available at the Luce Foundation Center information desk)

(for children and adults) Take a fun test of your skills in the Luce Foundation Center's scavenger hunt! Follow the clues to find specific artworks among the more than 3,300 objects on display.

American History Museum: Carts
(walk-in; check at either welcome desk for today's carts, time, and location)

Docents are stationed at carts, in various locations around the museum, to help visitors learn about the museum's collection through hands-on historical activities (e.g., use a cotton gin, peek through a stereoscope, feel what it was like to wear a corset, use a press to print a card, ask questions about immigration, and try copying a letter the way Jefferson did).

Anacostia Community Museum: Group Tours: George Washington Carver Nature Trail
(recommended for K-8th grade; for groups of 30 or fewer; by appointment only, call Mon.-Fri., 10 AM-5 PM, except federal holidays: 202-633-4870)

Learn about Dr. George Washington Carver and how to become a steward of the earth in your own neighborhood.

• 3rd Wednesday of each month, 10 AM-1 PM (weather permitting)

Note: Not suitable for people with mobility impairments.

Natural History Museum: Discovery Room
(1st floor, East Wing, near African Voices -- New Location)

The Discovery Room is a hands-on room for families with children and students. The room features activities using real museum objects and artifacts that allow visitors to explore the natural world at their own pace, guided by their own interests and sense of wonder. Visitors can look at fossils, skulls, shells, and minerals; use a microscope; try on costumes from around the world; and much more. Docents are available to assist and answer questions.

Natural History Museum: FossiLab
(walk-in, 1st floor, East Wing)

Visitors can watch through large windows museum technicians at work removing fossilized dinosaur remains from blocks of earth.

Note: Although there is no set schedule when staff are working in the lab, visitors can still see the lab and examples of fossils at various stages being extracted.

Natural History Museum: O. Orkin Insect Zoo
(walk-in; 2nd floor, West Wing)

A special facility where visitors can watch -- and hold -- live insects and their many legged relatives, discover the amazing diversity of arthropods, and learn how scientists study insect life.

Natural History Museum: Naturalist Center, Leesburg, VA

A resource center of some 36,000 natural history and anthropological specimens where visitors, students, collectors, and natural history lovers can handle and study these objects, identify their own treasures, do research, draw, and more.

Reconstructions of an animal exhibition area, an animal keeper's office, a commissary, and a veterinary hospital help young visitors learn what running a zoo and caring for animals is really like.
