Atlanta Remembers, Celebrates and Acts on the LIfe and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King |

“The Fierce Urgency Of Now”, The sixteenth annual Hands On Atlanta Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Summit, is an innovative six-day summit held Wednesday January 14 through Monday, January 19, exploring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s message of service, activism, diversity, and nonviolence. The Summit is presented by Hands On Atlanta, The King Center and Delta Air Lines. |

Hands on Charlotte Volunteer Event Honors MLK Through Service |
|
Building On The Dream is an annual large-scale volunteering event organized by the local nonprofit agency Hands On Charlotte (HOC). Its purpose is to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through service to the greater community. Building On The Dream offers volunteers the chance to participate in a range of service projects
on Saturday, January 17, with a kickoff celebration on that morning at Thomasboro Elementary School, as well as projects taking place on the MLK Holiday of Monday, January 19. Building On The Dream will activate as many as 500 volunteers at approximately 20 volunteer project sites around Charlotte, with each project focusing on the issues of poverty and challenged neighborhoods. |

Starbucks Joins Call for National Service and Asks, “Are You In?” |
|
Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX) and HandsOn Network are joining to launch the “I’m In!” campaign, an initiative to make it easy to participate in the President-elect’s call for national service. In participating Starbucks stores across the nation, the American public will have an opportunity to pledge five hours or more of community service toward a local volunteer opportunity of choice. Starbucks will honor each person who pledges with a free tall brewed coffee beginning Wednesday, Jan. 21 through Sunday, Jan. 25. The goal of the effort is to raise pledges in excess of one million hours of service from all over the country. |

Washington DCJCC MLK Day of Service |

The Washington DC Jewish Community Center would like to spread the word in our community about our annual MLK Day of Service. The project brings together close to 200 volunteers of all backgrounds and faiths. Volunteers will make a difference in the lives of young people in our community. |

MLK 2009: Celebrate the Dream |

In celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King’s Jr.’s birthday, Pittsburgh Cares will be holding two special events to promote respect for diversity in Pittsburgh. Participants are expected from schools, colleges, companies and the general public to continue the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by working together to build a stronger and more respectful community. |

UMSL Volunteers Make MLK Holiday a ‘Day On’ |
|
Students, faculty, staff and alumni at the University of Missouri-St. Louis will participate in the national MLK Holiday initiative making it “a day on,” not a day off. Led by the university’s Office of Student Life and Community Partnership Project, approximately 130 volunteers will spend time Jan. 19 at 13 local non-profit organizations celebrating King’s life through service to others. |
