Investigation of High Freezing Temperature, Zero Ozone, and Zero Global Warming Potential Chathrate Formers for Desalination

Thermal Energy Storage, Inc.; San Diego CA.
June 2000

Report #59 - Executive Summary -

This work included re-evaluation of the pilot plant, design, and construction of a small-scale test rig, and experiments that demonstrated that the process can produce high quality fresh water. The results of the experiments with the small scale test rig yielded water well within EPA potability limits. The survey of higher temperature clathrate formers yielded several candidates with formation temperatures of 50oF or higher. Additional development and testing on a pilot-scale should be done with the clathrate former selected from the candidates indentified in the study, and construction and testing of a pilot-plant in the San Diego area is recommended.
