Preservation of freshwater ecosystems in Navi Mumbai for sustainable resource utilization
Navi Mumbai, the satellite township of Mumbai, is bestowed with numerous freshwater bodies. However, there is a general lack of awareness about the significance and resource potential of these ecosystems. Realizing the vulnerability of these wetlands and their resource potential, TERI plans to develop a framework for sustainable use of these resources with the active support and funding of CIDCO (City and Industrial Development Corporation). As a first step, a 200 year old Khandeshwar Lake complex at Panvel is being developed as a comprehensive model to demonstrate feasibility of a 'sustainable wetland', which would be replicated elsewhere with appropriate modifications.
Lighting a billion lives
A total of 1.6 billion people in the world lack access to electricity, and 25% of them live in India. TERI commits to brightening the lives of one billion people by replacing kerosene and paraffin lanterns with solar lighting devices, providing better illumination and a smoke-free indoor environment, and by providing livelihood opportunities both at the individual and village levels.
