The Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is a great time to let people know what your program is all about—not just on one day, but throughout the year. Media coverage about your service project—newspapers or magazine articles, TV and radio stories, etc.—will help boost awareness of the national Day of Service and will also help you:
- Recruit new members or volunteers
- Reach potential funding sources
- Educate the public about your role in the community and
- Recognize hard-working members and volunteers
Reaching the news media starts with some homework and planning a strategy. When making decisions about media outreach, remember that you've got a lot of competition. Many organizations try to get their stories and events covered at the same time. Fortunately, most newspapers will plan to cover some aspect of Martin Luther King Day. Part of your job will be to inform the media that the holiday is a service day - a day on!... not a day off.
