Project Title: Giant Magnetoresistance Wire Sensor
Project Description: Giant magnetoresistance materials have electrical resistance sensitivities to magnetic fields that are 10 to 100 times those of traditional magnetoresistive materials. These new materials consist of interleaved magnetic and nonmagnetic metal layers having nanometer-scale thicknesses. A world record of 150% magnetoresistance was set recently in our laboratory for such superlattice structures. It is now recognized that similar behavior can be designed into related thin-film structures, such as heterogeneous nanodispersed composites of magnetic and nonmagnetic metals. The present work extends development to bulk-processing techniques for fabrication of inexpensive wire sensor material. Tasks involve the identification of suitable systems (such as Co-Ag), fabrication of bulk nanocomposites, and drawing of wires whose sensitivity to magnetic fields, linearity of response, and temperature coefficient of operation make them suitable as next-generation magnetoresistive sensor materials. Prototype devices are being designed for applications such as "smart" automobile traffic sensors and frequency control of motor shafts. Our approach is less expensive than the thin-film route taken by IBM and others. Our work involves a new phenomenon being investigated at a DOE laboratory that is also being rapidly converted into commercial use.
