Animal Production and Marketing Issues: Minor Livestock Commodities

Contents

U.S. farmers and ranchers raise many other types of livestock in addition to beef and dairy cattle, hogs, chickens, and turkeys. ERS analysts compile and analyze data on supply and demand, processing, pricing, and trade for sheep and aquaculture (production of aquatic animals and plants under controlled conditions). However, ERS does not routinely follow the markets for other livestock commodities, such as goats, rabbits, ducks, geese, game birds raised on farms, ostrich, and buffalo.

Sheep and Aquaculture

ERS periodically covers the aquaculture and sheep markets in the monthly Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry Outlook. For release dates, see the ERS calendar. For additional information, see the following briefing rooms:

Other Minor Livestock Commodities

Other USDA agencies have limited information and data on a few other minor livestock commodities.

USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) provides data on goat inventory and mohair production and prices:

NASS also includes ducks in its monthly Poultry Slaughter and Cold Storage updates.

USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service provides estimates on ducks and rabbits in its Miscellaneous Poultry Market News Reports.

USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service has more information about minor commodities in its food safety and handling fact sheets.
