Atlanta Remembers, Celebrates and Acts on the LIfe and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King

 

“The Fierce Urgency Of Now”, The sixteenth annual Hands On Atlanta Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Summit, is an innovative six-day summit held Wednesday January 14 through Monday, January 19, exploring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s message of service, activism, diversity, and nonviolence. The Summit is presented by Hands On Atlanta, The King Center and Delta Air Lines.

The 2009 Service Summit theme is “The Fierce Urgency Of Now”. The summit will examine the many challenges facing our communities, locally and globally, and introduce attendees to unique activities that empower change in our community as inspired by the life and legacy of Dr. King.

Through interactive workshops, panel discussions, films, performances and service projects attendees and volunteers explore community needs, develop proactive solutions and build new skills to carry forward in their civic lives. All events are free and open to the public.

Conferences on social activism involving workshops, performances and keynote presentations. Attendees explore a history of social activism and the contemporary uses of Dr. King’s philosophy of nonviolent social change.

Highlights Include:

From Freedom Riders to From Freedom Writers - Ambassador Andrew Young in Conversation with Willy Siegel-Leventhal in memory of Hosea Williams.

Experience the transformative energy of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Summit. Explore the relationships between faith, nonviolent social protest movements and service. Film screenings, performances and interdenominational and intergenerational dialogues.

Highlights Include:

16th Annual King Summit Freedom Rally - The Freedom Rally features speeches from the children of late civil rights leaders who are carrying forward the legacies of their parents interwoven with musical performances by local and international artists. Guest Speaker, Bernice King-daughter of the late Martin Luther King Jr.

Community Forums

Each One Teach One: Education Reform Models

Explores challenges in public education, particularly in urban settings, and the impact of local reform models. Keynote Address by Kathy Cox, Georgia State Superintendant.

Homelessness: The Lived Experience

The largest, most wide-ranging urban redevelopment currently underway in the U.S. , a panel of experts will examine the Beltline Project using three pillars of sustainability: environmental responsibility, social equity and economic viability.

A Day Of Service

Pay tribute to Dr. King by making your King Holiday a day ON, not a day OFF! Thousands of volunteers take the energy of the weekend to the streets by participating in direct service projects throughout metro Atlanta such as reading with children, visiting seniors and renovating and painting schools and neighborhoods.
