  Question

U.S. Financial Crisis

  Answer

The United States is in the midst of a serious financial crisis. A plan to address the crisis was proposed through the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 (EESA). The Act was signed into law on October 3, 2008.

Within the Act, the U.S. Department of the Treasury was granted authority/oversight of the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) to resolve the financial crisis. The Treasury created the Office of Financial Stability to oversee the program and appointed an interim assistant secretary. You may wish to view the Treasury's EESA Initiative web page, which has statements and press releases from officials on the financial crisis, as well as information and reports on the status of the EESA Initiative as parts of it are put into place.
