Last year, Washington State NRCS kicked off an award-winning public information campaign titled The Wonders of Wildlife to encourage landowners to develop or improve wildlife habitat on their land.  The campaign’s primary message is If you build it, they will come.

Recently, NRCS soil conservationist Monica Hoover took a picture of a fawn at a Wetlands Reserve Project (WRP) near Olympia, Washington. “This recently born fawn,” Monica said, “is proof positive – If you build it, they will come.”

This particular project is a WRP cost-share agreement with the Nisqually Indian Tribe. Twenty-two acres have been planted this year with an equal number of acres planned for planting next year.  About four acres were planted by volunteers and the rest by a Tribal crew. Monica said there will be another volunteer planting in the fall.

The area is part of the Nisqually River estuary and lies near the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge.  The WRP project will be managed as part of the refuge.

A number of wildlife species, including deer, are already taking advantage of their new home.
