Acting Secretary Chuck Conner last week announced that USDA recently enrolled
the one millionth acre in the
Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP).
"Enrolling the one millionth acre is an important milestone in the history of
USDA's Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program," said Conner. "By
collaborating with agricultural producers, State agencies and many other
partners through this highly effective program, USDA is improving water quality,
wildlife habitat, soil productivity, and air quality throughout the country
today and for the next generation."
The
achievement was celebrated with a ceremony on the patio in the Whitten Building
of USDA headquarters. USDA's Farm Service Agency (FSA) enrolled the one millionth
CREP acre last September on Steve Lange’s Pipestone County, Minnesota, farm.
Also participating in the ceremony were FSA Administrator Teresa Lasseter
and first acre
(enrolled in CREP) landowner Anna Bowers.
