Fuel Emulsions Analysis Program
Investigators have been researching the use of water-fuel emulsions in engine applications for many years. In recent years, the use of these fuels has increasingly been seen as a viable, cleaner alternative to conventional fuels. Many studies have found emissions reductions of NOx, PM and other pollutants in various applications, including highway and nonroad engines.
The EPA undertook this work to look at emulsions to help discern and quantify their effects on emissions using existing data and studies. Specifically, we looked at the effects that emulsions have on NOx, PM, HC, and fuel economy. The scope of this effort was largely based on the amount of relevant data received.
