NOAA ARL Ash Trajectory Forecasts

These graphics depict a simulation of the direction and speed of potential ash cloud motion from Cleveland. IF a significant ash cloud were generated by the current eruption. It does not mean that such an ash cloud has been produced. These models are run every 6 hours independent of the current eruptive state of the volcano. Each colored line indicates the direction a cloud would travel at different altitudes (see key below map plot).

AVO raised the aviation color code to Yellow and the alert level to Advisory at Cleveland on December 24 based on a thermal anomaly near the summit seen in satellite data the previous night. Clouds have obscured the volcano from satellite since then and no further observations have been recorded. Such thermal observations in the past have many times, but not always, preceded eruptive activity that has sent ash to altitudes of more than 20,000 ft above sea level and in 2001 as high as 39,000 ft. Eruptions in July 2008 produced ash plumes exceeding 25,000 ft. Cleveland volcano is not seismically monitored; satellite images and pilot reports are the primary source of information.
