U.S. Contributes Additional $17.56 Million to the United Nations High Commissioner for RefugeesThe United States is pleased to announce forthcoming contributions to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for its 2006 Supplementary Appeals for the return and reintegration of Sudanese refugees to South Sudan ($12 million), and protection and assistance to refugees and internally displaced persons in Darfur ($5.56 million). This will bring the total U.S. contribution to UNHCR’s worldwide activities for calendar year 2006 to more than $238 million.
The United States believes that the protection and care of refugees and the pursuit of durable solutions for them are shared international responsibilities. The United States is the single largest donor country to the UNHCR, doing our part to protect and assist refugees throughout the world. The United States urges other donors to strengthen their efforts in support of the programs of the UNHCR.
