The Ebbe Nielsen Prize, the only award in the world for work in biodiversity informatics, honors the memory of Ebbe Schmidt Nielsen, a Dane, who was an avid naturalist and renowned promoter of biodiversity informatics. He was a founding member of the GBIF Governing Board, on which he represented Australia.
To date, the prize has been awarded three times. In 2002, Dr. Nozomi Ytow of Japan received the prize for developing the Nomencurator, a new database model for tracking scientific names. Dr. Stefan Schröder of Germany won the 2003 prize for his part in developing an interactive, digital means for even non-specialists to identify bee species in the field or in the laboratory. In 2004, the Prize went to Mr. Johan Nilsson of Sweden for his development of a web-based means for users to report observations of species, called Artportalen.
For the 2005 competition, the guidelines for nominations have been somewhat expanded. The Prize is not restricted to researchers in the early stages of a career (although this is still preferred), and for the first time, small teams of researchers are eligible to be nominated for the one prize.
Nominations for the 2005 Prize are to be submitted to the Secretariat by 15 December 2004, by GBIF Participants or Associate Participants. Nominators may submit more than one nomination; nominees can come from any country. If an institution or individual would like to see someone nominated, this can be done in cooperation with a GBIF Participant or Associate Participant. Contact can be made via the GBIF node of the selected Participant.
