Diet Quality & Nutrition

Americans enjoy one of the most bountiful and affordable food supplies in the world. Yet, some Americans face food insufficiencies while others struggle with balancing overconsumption of some nutrients and underconsumption of others. ERS examines the interplay of social, economic, and demographic factors on food choices and the effect of these choices on diet quality and health. ERS research contributes to the debate on nutrition policy and the efficacy of the Nation's food assistance programs.

Spotlights

Food Availability (Per Capita) Data System—ERS annually calculates the amounts of several hundred foods available for human consumption in the United States. The data system also tracks per capita servings (also known as per capita food intake data or loss-adjusted food supply data), and total nutrient availability (2004 data now available).

Can Food Stamps Do More To Improve Food Choices? An Economic Perspective—Food stamp recipients, like other Americans, struggle with nutrition problems associated with choice of foods, as well as amounts. This series of Economic Information Bulletins compiles evidence to help answer the question of whether the Food Stamp Program can do more to improve the food choices of participants.
