Training on Grassland Bird Conservation Models Available This Month

Grassland bird populations are declining faster and more steadily than any other group of North American birds.  However, decision support, regionally-based habitat models that planners can use for grassland bird habitat conservation have not been available until now.

Using these habitat models for grassland birds in the Northern Plains – an area stretching from northeastern Montana to northern Iowa – can aid comprehensive planning and development of habitat critical to meeting population objectives described in the North American Waterfowl Management Plan.

Multi-scale habitat models were developed for 16 species, including 12 listed as priority species by The Nature Conservancy, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Partners in Flight, and others  These GIS-based models will assist a planner in recognizing priority grassland bird landscapes and coinciding waterfowl habitats and then identifying where the greatest overlap exists.  This will allow conservation planners to deliver habitat conservation to areas with the greatest multiple benefits.

Training on use of the models for grassland birds will be provided via Web conference for all interested NRCS employees and partners on September 13, 2007.  Please contact Bill Hohman, NRCS wildlife biologist, at 817-509-3332 for details.  A replay of the net conference will be available for those unable to attend the live session.
