Thomas Jefferson's Library: A Catalog With the Entries in His Own Order

Edited by James Gilreath and Douglas L. Wilson

1989 : Library of Congress

This catalog of Thomas Jefferson's library was originally prepared at Jefferson's request by Nicholas Trist in 1823. Trist worked from a copy of a printed 1815 catalog arranged alphabetically by title which was issued by the Library of Congress after the U.S. Congress acquired Jefferson's library in 1814. Trist's restored arrangement reflects Jefferson's intellectual classification of the works as well as their physical placement on the shelves at Monticello.

This online version was produced under the auspices of the Bibliographic Enrichment Advisory Team (BEAT) of the Library of Congress as part of the BeCites+ Project in 2001. The catalog is also cited in another Jefferson guide produced through the BeCites+ Project: Thomas Jefferson: An American Man for All Seasons.
