NASIS Future Plans

This page is devoted to providing NASIS users a sneak preview of some of the new elements in NASIS currently under development. Prior to the development of any new NASIS functionality the NASIS ITC team and NSSC work together with a broad selection of users from the field to analyze and define the business requirements. Only after a clear understanding of what the user needs to be able to do, does the ITC team begin implementation and development of the software. There are two main purposes for the sneak preview.

  • Inform the user and keep them up to date on new NASIS functionality currently being developed.
     
  • Solicit user feedback on the development in progress, its look and feel, performance, and refine any of the user business requirements.

Current Work in Progress

  • Windows Pedon
    A new release of the Pedon data collection program is under development for Microsoft Windows 95/98/NT/2000 computers. It will include all the pedon data elements used in NASIS 5.0. Testing of this new program will begin in the fall of 2001, with release expected in December.
     
  • Pedon Conversion
    Pedon databases from the old Pedon 3.6 system have been converted and brought into the NASIS 5.0 database. About 8000 pedons from the Soil Survey Lab are now being converted, which will complete the process of moving all the old pedon data into NASIS.
     
  • NASIS Enhancements
    Improvements are being made in the NASIS Help system and in the process for connecting to the central server and downloading files. Preparations are being made to split the data now in the Component Potential Ecosystem table into two new tables, Component Ecological Site and Component Other Vegetative Classification.
     
  • STATSGO Conversion
    Preparations are being made to bring STATSGO map units into NASIS so that they can be managed and analyzed with the same tools NASIS provides. The conversion of STATSGO map units will begin in late August 2001, and should be completed by November.

Analysis in Progress

  • Soil Data Delivery and Data Warehouse
    An analysis group is gathering information to describe the requirements for a new system to maintain and archive the officially certified copies of soil survey data for public distribution. This will provide a single source of data for national programs, including conservation programs and NRI, to help avoid inconsistencies between programs.
     
  • Dealing with Multiple Soil Component Interpretations (07/01/05)
