Federal Travel Regulation Discussion M&IE amount

Question:

I am attending a class (8 hours) and travelling home the same night due to operational necessity. My entire day will be approx. 15 hours. Do I get the full M&IE or only 3/4 because I travel that day?

Answer:

Regardless of how many hours an employee works or travels on their travel days (first and last day of official travel), they will always receive 75 percent of the applicable M&IE rate.

Of course, you will have to meet the following requirements to receive any type of per diem reimbursement.

1. Perform official travel away from your official station, or other areas (or mileage requirements) defined by your agency; and

2. Incur per diem expenses while performing official travel; and

3. Be in a travel status for more than 12 consecutive hours.

For the first and last day of official travel, employees are authorized 75 percent of the applicable M&IE rate provided they meet the above requirements.
