Loriene Roy, a member of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe, is current president of the American Library Association. She founded and directs "If I Can Read, I Can Do Anything," a national reading club for Native American children and "Honoring Generations," a graduate scholarship program for indigenous students.

Although our nation's Native American population has lived apart from mainstream America for generations, they have willingly served the U.S. in several wars. During World War II, the unique heritage of the Navajo prepared them for pivotal roles as code talkers in the Pacific Theater. Keith M. Little was but one who served in this capacity.

An American artist trained in Paris, George de Forest Brush lived for a time among the Arapahoe, Shoshone, and Crow tribes of Wyoming and Montana. He created an important series of paintings that were much celebrated by his contemporaries but have rarely been seen since their completion in the 1880s.
