National Governors Association

The ongoing mission of the National Governors Association (NGA) is to provide support to governors and their staff by providing a bipartisan forum to help shape and implement national policy and to assist with resolving state problems. The NGA Center for Best Practices helps governors and their staff learn about emerging issues, what solutions do and do not work, and ways to implement programs.

Founded in 1908 and establishing an Office of State Federal Relations in 1967, the NGA is the collective voice of the nation's governors. NGA provides governors and their senior staff members with services that range from representing states on Capitol Hill and before the administration on key federal issues to developing policy reports on innovative state programs and hosting networking seminars for state government executive branch officials. NGA also provides management and technical assistance to both new and incumbent governors. The NGA Center for Best Practices focuses on state innovations and best practices on issues that range from education and health to technology, welfare reform, and the environment. The Center also develops solutions to stay ahead of challenges through on-site analysis with governors' program and policy staff; by convening focus groups of policymakers, program officials, and outside experts; and by bringing together expertise across state boundaries to share common experience.

Partnership Activities

The goals of the cooperative agreement between NGA and CDC are to provide cancer control information, resources, and provide assistance to the states. The NGA Center for Best Practices developed a searchable clearinghouse of best practices in cancer prevention and control that was based on state-submitted information about their most effective cancer control and prevention activities and how each was evaluated and funded. NGA is also able to provide access to data on cancer incidence and mortality rates, demographics of people who are most at risk of developing certain types of cancer, and summaries of state and federal legislation that empower states to address cancer issues.
