Prevent Cancer Foundation

The mission of the Prevent Cancer Foundation (PCF) is the prevention and early detection of cancer through scientific research and education.

PCF, formerly the Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation, is a national, nonprofit organization founded in 1985. PCF's efforts are concentrated on those cancers that can be detected early or prevented through lifestyle changes or screening such as lung, breast, prostate, colorectal, cervical, testicular, and skin cancer. Since its inception, PCF has supported research, education, and early detection programs in excess of $57 million. PCF's programs include the National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month (NCRCAM); Hope Street Kids, a pediatric cancer initiative; Congressional Families Action for Cancer Awareness, an educational program led by Congressional spouses; ¡Celebremos la Vida! — Let's Celebrate Life!, a breast and cervical health education program for Hispanic women; Prevent Cancer Foundation/GW Mammovan; Dr. Health'nstein's Body Fun, a Web-based children's health education game; and Project Early Awareness, a breast health program for African-American teens.

Partnership Activities

PCF is a cofounder of NCRCAM, held each March, and is the primary sponsor of the Colossal Colon Tour, a national tour initiated as part of NCRCAM. The Colossal Colon Tour brings a 40-foot long, 4-foot high replica of a human colon to U.S. cities, promoting awareness by showing healthy colon tissue, colon disease, polyps, and various stages of colon cancer. PCF's Dialogue for Action program, also held in March, is a national forum for health care professionals, representatives of government, and health advocates to advance colorectal screening nationwide. Additionally, PCF is a founding member of the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable (NCCRT). NCCRT is a forum through which members share information, identify needs and opportunities, and address gaps in research, programs, activities, and services relating to colorectal cancer.

CDC has recently funded PCF for a five-year period to assist 14 states in the delivery of a one-day colorectal cancer Dialogue for Action conference; these conferences are designed to encourage diverse attendees to work through barriers among providers, health care systems, and the public that impede colorectal cancer screening. The assistance PCF will provide includes help with training the event staff and planning and designing the conference. The intended participants in these conferences are state health agencies and their partners. By enabling participants to work through the multitude of issues related to colorectal cancer screening, these Dialogue for Action conferences will ultimately benefit the medically underserved and those who have yet to be screened for colorectal cancer.
