About the Project

Parallel Histories: Spain, the United States, and the American Frontier is a bilingual, multi-format English-Spanish digital library site that explores the interactions between Spain and the United States in America from the fifteenth to the early nineteenth centuries. A cooperative effort between the National Library of Spain, the Biblioteca Colombina y Capitular of Seville and the Library of Congress, the project is part of the Library of Congress Global Gateway initiative to build digital library partnerships with national libraries around the world.

Through the presentation in digital form of books, maps, prints and photographs, manuscripts, and other documents from the collections of the partner libraries, this project illuminates five main themes related to the history of Spain and the parallel histories between the United States and Spain: Exploration and Early Settlement, Colonization and Settlement, Meeting of Cultures and Religious/Evangelical Activities, American Revolution, and Mutual Perceptions. Exploration and Early Settlement was launched in June 2005; the other sections are in process.

Parallel Histories: Spain, the United States, and the American Frontier is part of the Library of Congress' Global Gateway project to establish cooperative digital libraries with national libraries around the world. Acerca del Proyecto

Historias Paralelas: España, Estados Unidos y la Frontera Americana es una biblioteca digital bilingüe inglés/español en formatos múltiples que explora las interacciones entre España y los Estados Unidos en América desde el siglo XV hasta las primeras décadas del XIX. Es un proyecto llevado a cabo en de un programa cooperación entre la Biblioteca Nacional de España, La Biblioteca Colombina y Capitular de Sevilla y la Biblioteca del Congreso. Este proyecto es parte integral de la iniciativa del Global Gateway (Portal Global) de la Biblioteca del Congreso para crear bibliotecas digitales en cooperación con otras bibliotecas nacionales.

A través de la presentación en forma digital de libros, mapas, grabados y fotografías, manuscritos y otros documentos de las colecciones de las bibliotecas participantes, este proyecto ilustra cinco temas relacionados con la historia de España y las historias paralelas entre los Estados Unidos y España: Exploración y Primeros Asentamientos, Colonización y Asentamiento, el Encuentro de Culturas y Actividades Religiosas/Evangélicas, la Revolución Americana, y las Percepciones Mútuas entre ambos países. El tema Exploración y Primeros Asentamientos fue lanzado en junio de 2005; las otras secciones están en vías de completarse.
