Whitehouse Kids

First Kids in the White House

Tad Lincoln was 7 years old when his father, Abraham Lincoln, was elected president in 1861. The family lived in the White House throughout the Civil War, and Tad liked playing war and watching the Union soldiers who stood guard outside the house. Tad, a notorious prankster, also rode his pet goats through the East Room, according to the White House Historical Association. This undated photo of President Lincoln and Tad was found in a family album belonging to Mrs. James Gaines of Philadelphia.
