The Golden Globes Kick Off Award Season Vintage

Monday January 12, 2009
For any red carpet Hollywood event I have my fingers crossed for vintage gowns.

It seems that over the last few years, celebrities were opting to wear lots of vintage jewelry, but not very many vintage dresses. It may have a little something to do with a few underhanded moves made by designers and stylists in recent years that caused major fashion faux pas for a few celebrities.

There was of course the incident of the gold and white 1950s Chanel dress worn Reese Witherspoon in 2006 to the Golden Globes which was also worn by Kirsten Dunst to a Globes party in 2003. A similar incident occured when Natilie Portman wore a dress to the Academy Awards in 2006 that had been worn to an event by Debra Messing in 2001.

This year no such controversy seems to be popping up yet (but there's still the SAGs, Grammy's, and Oscars coming up), and seveal actresses wore vitnage to the Golden Globes. Heidi Klum wore a fun vintage cocktail dress by Galliano and Mad Men's Elizabeth Moss wore a fire red vintage chiffon dress. With any luck the next few award show events will have even more vintage gowns to ogle over. Next up is the Screen Actors Guild Awards on January 31st; are your fingers crossed?

Urban Outfitters Do Vintage...On eBay?

Monday December 29, 2008
There are tons and tons of vintage clothing sellers on eBay, but how do you know who to trust? Well now one eBay seller has a name you can surely trust, Urban Outfitters. That's right, Urban Outfitters has taken their best "Urban Renewal" vintage pieces and put them up for auction. All pieces are hand picked for their auction store, making them available to everyone, not just shoppers in the select stores that carry the Renewal lines.

New items are added every week, but if you want to get your hands on any of these prime pieces, you had better act fast because there is no "buy it now" option. Once word gets out that Urban is selling cheap vintage on eBay, it will never be cheap again!

Re/Dress Plus Size Vintage Opens!

Monday December 22, 2008
It's commonly said that good things come to those who wait, and a lot of ladies have been waiting for a store like Re/Dress Vintage and Consignment. The first and only size 14+ vintage store in NYC has recently opened a 2,000 sq. shop in Brooklyn's Boerum Place.

Re/Dress owner Deb Malkin organized the Fat Girl Flea market in 2002 after she realized how difficult it was for her and her friends to find large size vintage clothing. With the amazing turnouts for the Fat Girl Flea, as well at other flea markets and vintage fairs Malkin set up booths at, it was apparent that the demand required a full time shop.

With proof that plus sized vintage does exist and that there is a market for it, there will hopefully be more vintage shops that offer or specialize in vintage clothing. For a peak of what Re/Dress has to offer, you can visit the Re/Dress Flickr album.

Standard Holiday Gift (Vintage Style) No. 2: Books

Monday December 15, 2008
My sister asked me the other day, "Why do you have so many books on your Amazon wishlist?".

Well besides the fact that Amazon.com is known as a book seller, I said "Dude, you know I love books". For me, books are the hands down best gifts to give and get. I will never ever have too many or not want them. If you have a vintage lover in your life who is also a book lover, than a vintage themed book is right up their alley. Make short of your shopping by checking out these vintage titles:

La Porte, Indiana by Jason Bitner: This perfect coffee table book contains professional studio portraits selected from over 18,000 images found in the back of a restaurant in LaPorte, Indiana. LaPorte is a glimpse of real Americans throughout many decades of the 20th century...including their fashions.

The Little Dictionary of Fashion: A Guide to Dress Sense for Every Woman by Christian Dior: Every woman could use lessons the lessons that Monsieur Dior has to offer in the tiny but useful book. Not only are the tips applicable today, but also lend a deeper appreciation for the clothing of the times it was originally written for.

What Would Audrey Do?: Timeless Lessons for Living with Grace and Style by Pamela Keogh and What Would Jackie Do?: An Inspired Guide to Distinctive Living by Shelly Branch: Two different takes on how to be a woman of style and grace by learning from the most memorable fashion icons of all time, Audrey Hepburn and Jackie O.

Little Black Dress: Vintage Treasure by Didier Ludot: Speaking of icons, there is no more iconic piece of clothing than the little black dress. Learn how it became a fashion staple and why it has stayed a necessity.
