OXO - The World's First Video Game

History is chock full of pioneers. Ann S. Stephens wrote the first dime novel, Richard T. James invented the Slinky, John Quincy Adams was the first president to wear pants at a ceremony, and Alexander Sandy Douglas created the first video game.

New Year's Resolutions Featuring Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection

Friday January 9, 2009
Sonic's Ultimate Genesis CollectionWhat is your New Year’s resolution for 2009? I thought about joining a gym, but I can't find one that considers the Nintendo Wii as a piece of exercise equipment. Then I thought about watching what I eat, but sitting down to play the arcade game BurgerTime and the Atari 2600 classic Fast Food get my cravings up for junk food. I’d look for a better job, but let’s face it, you can’t get a better gig than playing and writing about the very best video games in history. Finally I decided to spend 2009 focusing on something really important that I’ve been neglecting…PLAYING MORE CLASSIC VIDEO GAMES!

Well it looks like the folks at SEGA have decided to make the very same resolution because they just made the first video game collection announcement of the new year with Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. Although not scheduled to come out until Spring of 2009, we’ve got a preview gallery showing off a sampling of the 16-bit wonders held in this Next Gen HD collection.

MAGFest Game Expo - January 2nd to 4th, 2009

Friday January 2, 2009

A classic video game show almost slipped by me this month, but thanks to fellow fan Andy for sending me a last minute e-mail about MAGFest! This video game expo held in Alexandria, Virginia takes a unique twist on the Expo format. Yes there are lectures, dealers and exhibitions, but it all done in a communal format with the special guests mingling with the fans and a laid back attitude that makes the show feel like a big party.

In addition to all of the retro gaming happenings at the show, there will also be a special world champion high score tournament to name the new champion of the classic arcade game Nibbler. You can watch live coverage of the Nibbler competition with streaming video and score tallies at RetroTing.com.

To make sure that a show never gets overlooked, or to discuss shows you plan to visit or have just attended, I've put together a Classic Video Game Events section in the forum. Post, chat, play, n' stuff.

Ring in the New Year with the Best Arcade Games of 1978

Wednesday December 31, 2008
Space Invaders Cabinet Art

It's New Years Eve and gaming press has been serving up loads of "Best of 2008" video game recaps, but this is the Classic Video Game section Dawg, so we're going to wind the calendar back to a time when Disco was king, Bell Bottoms were in style (the first time 'round), Afros were "solid!" and coin-op Arcades had just hit their stride! It's the Best Arcade Games of 1978 - A Classic Video Game Year in Review!

1978 was one of the grooviest times for arcade games thanks to the debut of Space Invaders. Not only did Invaders shoot arcade games (and aliens) from modest fad to pop culture phenomena, but its popularity actually caused a coin shortage in Japan! 1978 was also the year we were introduced to trac-ball games with Atari Football, and the premiere of first-person driving games courtesy of Speed Freak. So get your head trucking on over to the year where games got down!

Christmas with Pac-Man - The Strangest Holiday Yet

Monday December 22, 2008
The Pac-Man Christmas Story - Book and RecordDuring this time of year I like to reflect on the holidays of my youth; when Pac-Mom, Pac-Dad and Pac-Baby would gather together, roast Power Pellets on an open fire and run like heck from the Ghost Monsters. I’m talking about those incredibly weird Pac-Man Christmases. For some reason Pac-Man has always been associated with the yuletide season. Not only did the chomping king star in his very own primetime holiday special, but he also released two Christmas albums, a comic book adventure, tree ornaments and more! The phenomena of Pac-Man’s work representing Christmas is so bizarre that I just had to document it all, so enjoy this special holiday presentation of a Very Pac-Man Christmas.
