National Association of State Boards of Education*

NASBE is the national private association representing all state and territorial boards of education. Since 1987, NASBE has partnered with the Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH) to provide guidance and assistance to state and local education policymakers and practitioners. NASBE's goal is to encourage safe, healthy, and nurturing school environments for all of the nation's children and youth.

NASBE's Program in Action

NASBE is funded under two Capacity-Building Assistance categories:

  • Preventing HIV Infections: State and Local Education Agencies.

  • Preventing Chronic Diseases: Increasing Healthy Eating.

For Preventing HIV Infections: State and Local Education Agencies, NASBE is

  • Providing capacity-building assistance to four CDC/Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH)-funded state or local education agencies that are NASBE members and have expressed a commitment to pursue a guided HIV-related education policy and program improvement initiative. This assistance also includes funds to help support state and local education agencies in their efforts.

  • Providing HIV-related information and guidance to state boards of education and other education stakeholders on policies that promote effective HIV prevention for kindergarten through 12th grade students in schools across the nation.

  • Convening a meeting of African American State Board Members to: 1) educate board members and raise awareness about the HIV/AIDS crisis in the African American Community; and 2) demonstrate the correlation between health disparities, risk behaviors, and education disparities, and the role of cultural competency.

  • Meeting with various NGOs and government agencies to plan and coordinate capacity building assistance (CBA) activities.

  • Conducting a Policy Symposium on "Risk Behaviors and Drop Outs" for at least 12 State Teams on state policies, programs, and activities designed to support effective risk prevention activities.

Other NGOs funded under this category:

For Preventing Chronic Diseases: Increasing Healthy Eating, NASBE is

  • Providing technical assistance to at least 10 teams led by state board of education members to help local school districts establish, maintain, and evaluate healthy school nutrition environments and collaborate with parents, community, and public health partners on improving healthy eating at school.

  • Reconvening the 14 four-person state teams that attended the October 2007 "Policy Symposium on Healthy Eating" to attend a follow-up "Obesity Prevention Policy Symposium" on July 10–11, 2008 in collaboration with NASBE's new obesity prevention project, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

  • Providing policy information and guidance on increasing healthy eating to the nation’s state and local health and education agencies by writing national policy updates on topics important to education leaders.

  • Maintaining and updating NASBE’s online state school health policy database, which contains state laws, regulations, and other policies on dozens of school health issues.

  • Reaching out to newly funded 801 grantees and orienting them to the materials, resources, and types of capacity building assistance available from NASBE.
