CGIAR scientists work in over 100 countries, addressing every critical component of the agricultural sector. Thirteen of the 15 CGIAR Centers are located in developing countries and the knowledge gathered is shared and disseminated across the world.

Our Virtual Information Center can provide information on the topics listed below. To obtain information on these topics, please use the email links under each section.

Agriculture in the Dry Areas
includes the improvement of barley, lentil, and faba bean; on-farm management of water, improvement of nutrition and productivity of small ruminants (sheep and goats). In Central Asia and North Africa: improvement of durum and bread wheats, chickpea, pasture and forage legumes and farming systems.
International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA)

Agroforesty
includes tall trees for food and cash crops, and for livestock. Fodder trees for animals, trees and shrubs to marke boundaries, closely planted trees as living fences around livestock. Fast growing trees for fuelwood for cooking and income, slow growing trees for timber and building, as investment for the future. Trees and shrubs that can be intercropped with other plants to improve soil quality and control weeds and pests. Alternatives to slash and burn and more.

includes all the ecosystems, species and genetic diversity that supports
people, directly and indirectly. A diverse agriculture delivers a
healthier, more nutritious diet. It protects the environment at the same
time as improving peoples' lives. It spreads the risk of catastrophic
failure and famine
