The Second Western Hemisphere Migratory Species Conference was held in San Jose, Costa Rica, January 16-20, 2006 and was entitled “Hands across the Hemisphere: Helping People to Help Wildlife.”  The conference brought together government wildlife officials and representatives from non-governmental organizations and conventions with interests in international dialogue and cooperation on this theme.  The objectives of the event were to update activities since the 2003 conference in Chile, to take further steps towards establishment of a permanent forum for the conservation of migratory wildlife and, perhaps, biological diversity more broadly, and to explore regional and subregional collaboration regarding a major hemispheric priority –capacity building.  Wildlife directors from most countries in the hemisphere attended the event.
