Grants Give Students, Residents Clinical Experience;
Improve Underserved Communities’ Access to Health Care
HHS
Secretary Tommy G. Thompson announced 22 new and continuing
grants totaling more than $3 million to give health professions
residents and students community and clinical experience practicing
in health professional shortage areas.
The
awards are made under the National Health Service Corps’ Student/Resident
Experiences and Rotations in Community Health (SEARCH) program.
The SEARCH program links community-based sites and academic
institutions and provides opportunities for health professions
students and residents to build their skills while providing
care in needy communities.
Funding
for the SEARCH program is competitive and is available only
to State Primary Care Offices and State/Regional Primary Care
Associations. Puerto
Rico and the following states were awarded two-year grants:
Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas,
Maine, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, North Dakota,
Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee,
Utah, Virginia, and West Virginia.
HHS’
