Frequently Asked Questions
Firewood
How can I get firewood for my home? The federal
agencies in the central Oregon area have gone together on one
permit that will allow you to cut wood on their lands. The three
agencies are Prineville BLM, Ochoco and Deschutes National Forests.
You will need to purchase your permits at local vendors or from
the offices of the agencies. You will be given a synopsis that
will show you the places where you can cut fire wood. Fire wood
cutting is allowed only in certain areas. Wood cutting season
usually start the first of April and ends November 30. During
the summer firewood cutting maybe limited due to fire conditions.
You are allowed to have 8 cords per year for your use. Due to
the cost of administration of the personal use fire wood program
you must purchase at least 2 cords at a time. Please purchase
only the amount that you can haul out during woodcutting season
because these permits are non refundable.
How do I get firewood for my campground fire? Some
campground hosts may have wood available for purchase, but you
are not required purchase from them. You can go out into the forest
and retrieve down wood to use at your camp site. Please only use
wood that will fit into the fireplace that is provided at your
site. Logs that stick out of the fireplace can be a fire hazard.
