Recruitment Incentives: FSIS Public Health Veterinarian
Use this information along with the information on How to Apply: FSIS Public Health Veterinarian . Note that some incentives are authorized only in specific geographic locations.

Student Loan Repayments
Student loan repayments of up to $20,000 per person are available for all newly employed veterinarians in all locations.

Recruitment Bonuses
FSIS employs more than 1,100 Public Health Veterinarians nationwide. Recruitment bonuses are currently authorized for some locations.

Superior Qualifications
Under CFR 531.203, FSIS has the authority to set pay above the minimum rate of pay of the grade for a new appointment or reappointment based on the superior qualifications of the individual or the special need of the agency. "Special need" requires the applicant to bring a knowledge or skill of exceptional value to the agency that is directly related to the successful achievement of program goals. An appointment or reappointment for GS-701 positions at an advanced rate of pay above the step 1 of a grade may be possible. Applicants are encouraged to provide a FULL and COMPLETE summary of their credentials, including ALL work experience, advanced degrees, licenses, certifications and internships in order to receive full consideration. This information must be included with your resume.

Direct-Hire Authority
The Office of Personnel Management has granted direct-hire authority to the Food Safety and Inspection Service for GS-11/12 Veterinary Medical Officer positions nationwide. There is a critical hiring need in severe shortage locations and these positions play an important role in protecting the nation's food supply. This authority is described in Section 1312 of the Homeland Security Act of 2002 and 5 CFR, part 337. Candidates under this announcement are not rated or ranked and individuals are not awarded preference for their status as a veteran. Applicants are still strongly encouraged to provide complete information about their job-related experience and education, as well as provide documentation related to veteran's preference.

Creditable Service for Annual Leave Accrual
FSIS is offering Creditable Service for Annual Leave Accrual as a recruitment incentive that will allow new employees to receive credit toward their annual leave (vacation) accrual for directly-related work performed either outside the federal government or during active duty in a uniformed service. This incentive is available on a case by case basis for the following locations authorized for recruitment bonuses.

Referral Bonus
A referral bonus award up to $1,000 may be available for current FSIS employees for referrals nationwide.
