Sen. Hutchison Secures Full Funding for U.S. Missile Defense at Czech Site
Restores $98 Million in FY 09 MilCon-VA Appropriations Bill


WASHINGTON -- U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), the Ranking Member on the Senate Military Construction and Veterans Affairs (Milcon-VA) Appropriations Subcommittee, today successfully restored over $98 million in funding for a U.S. missile defense site to be built in the Czech Republic.

The Fiscal Year (FY) 2009 Milcon-VA Appropriations bill only had $10.312 million in the bill for the mid-course radar site project before Sen. Hutchison was able to fully restore funding to the U.S. Defense Department’s (DoD) original request of $108.56 million.

“It is important for the national security of the United States and our allies that our missile defense capability is fully funded as DoD has requested,” said Sen. Hutchison.

In Prague on July 8 the U.S. and the Czech Republic signed a bilateral agreement allowing the establishment of an advanced radar station to be built in the Czech Republic. The radar will significantly enhance the European Missile Defense Shield, which will protect Europe and the U.S. homeland from the growing threat of ballistic missiles. At a summit in April, NATO endorsed the U.S. Missile Defense Plan.

The FY 09 Milcon-VA Appropriations bill is now ready to be considered by the full Senate.
