Where: In northwestern Montana, about 10 miles
north of Missoula.
Habitat: Steeply rolling hills among the range's
18,763 acres are dominated by prairie grasses interspersed
with streams, lakes, and stands of Douglas fir and ponderosa
pine.
Wildlife: The Bison Range is a symbol of contrition
for an earlier time, when the American bison was nearly
exterminated. Between 350 and 500 of the shaggy mammals
are found here, along with elk, pronghorn antelope,
bighorn sheep, mountain goats, black bears, and 200
species of birds.
