The Future of Gaming in 2009

Thursday January 15, 2009
I'm looking forward to this year of game releases. Namely for "The Sims 3" and "Cities XL." What about the game developers? What are their thoughts about the future of gaming? I want to know what they're thinking. It may give us clues as to what we can expect.

BBC chatted with five game developers to get their thoughts. Among the five was Peter Molyneux, from Lionhead Studios and Will Wright, the creator of "The Sims." Molyneux said next year was "looking a bit dry." Wright was more optimistic saying, "Next year, we're going to see more connected games - more social networking rather than just multiplayer."

Wright goes on to talk about incorporating GPS technology into games. BBC quotes him as saying, "a mobile game that interacts with a GPS (global positioning system) so that where you physically play the game in the real world will have a direct effect on the game you are playing."

Imagine what this could mean for pc gaming. Take "The Sims" series, for example. An application for cell phones could be included with a game that always data to move between the two. When we traveled we could bring our current families with us, while finding buying new objects.

Our Sims weather could be the same that we are experiencing right now. Maybe different stores available to buy clothes and objects based on where we are located. Or maybe Sims can learn new recipes based on location. Go to New England and discover how to make clam chowder. Imagine a city in "SimCity" developing based upon GPS coordinates. A lot of my ideas would benefit those gamers on the move. It'd work if the new item we find or buy could be traded online. I don't want to be left out on owning any fabulous new outfits.

What are you ideas for using GPS and games together?

"Fitness Dash" Demo

Wednesday January 14, 2009
How's everyone doing on their New Year's resolutions? Broke that resolution to exercise 3 times a week? Congrats to those who are doing well! I was scrolling through a list of games on About.com's Arcade, when I realized I needed to find a game that did not involve fatty foods or sweets. It wasn't much longer afterwards that I found "Fitness Dash." It appears the citizens are Dinerland need help getting in shape.

"Fitness Dash" uses the same formula as other time management games (like "Turbo Pizza" and "Cake Shop"). Do you think maybe it will encourage me to exercise in the same way "Diner Dash" has me wanting french fries? Me neither.

From CES - The Ultimate Virtual Driving Experience

Monday January 12, 2009
LAS VEGAS - The Consumer Electronics Show has its share of practical devices, but it's also a great place to have some fun with over-the-top tech toys you just won't find at your local Best Buy. That's certainly the case with SimCraft's Apex SC830 (shown in the photo) which is used by real race car drivers and pilots, but is destined for the consumer market, as well. The Apex SC830 features a chassis suspended over hydraulic mechanisms that add instantaneous and realistic motion loading to your driving or flying experience. Driving the Apex SC830 is downright exhilarating (until you spin into a wall), and can be all yours for just $39,000. There may be a more affordable SimCraft in the future, as the company is working on a consumer model for to be released in 2010.

"Spore Galactic Adventures" Expansion On the Horizon

Friday January 9, 2009
I knew that one day I would be writing this post. "Spore" will its first expansion pack released this Spring. "Spore Galactic Adventures" appears to be more content focusing on the space stage and missions. Good choice since the space stage seems to be the favorite stage among the gamers I've chatted with about "Spore."

So who's buying? And who's boycotting more expansions? "Spore" needs a good meaty expansion or two, but not eight. I wonder if we'll get a pack for each stage...
