Why are there mining exhibits at the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center? Because mining was one of the main incentives for westward migration. Because mining was a major influence on the settlement and early culture of eastern Oregon. Because the Center is located atop Flagstaff Hill, previous site of the Flagstaff Gold Mine.

Visitors can see remnants of the historic Flagstaff Mine which began operation in 1896.

An outdoor lode mine exhibit under development features a millhouse recreated from the historic Rabbit Mine in the Blue Mountains. It contains a five-stamp mill and other equipment used to pulverize ore and recover gold. Exhibits, demonstrations, gold panning, and living history presentations show visitors the technology and culture once common in mine camps in early eastern Oregon, and the importance of mining in the westward migration story.
