Welcome to the USDA Forest Service — National Forest Health Monitoring Program

The USDA Forest Service, Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) is a national program designed to determine the status, changes, and trends in indicators of forest condition on an annual basis. The FHM program uses data from ground plots and surveys, aerial surveys, and other biotic and abiotic data sources and develops analytical approaches to address forest health issues that affect the sustainability of forest ecosystems.

Forest Health Monitoring (FHM)
is a national program designed to determine the status, changes, and trends in indicators of forest condition on an annual basis. The FHM program uses data from ground plots and surveys, aerial surveys, and other biotic and abiotic data sources and develops analytical approaches to address forest health issues that affect the sustainability of forest ecosystems. FHM covers all forested lands through a partnership involving USDA Forest Service, State Foresters, and other state and federal agencies and academic groups.

Evaluation Monitoring
The Evaluation Monitoring (EM) component of the Forest Health Monitoring program is designed to determine the extent, severity, and causes of undesirable changes in forest health identified through Detection Monitoring (DM) and other means. The need for EM projects arises when significant forest health changes or trends are found in DM. EM also provides additional information about forest health improvements such as improved plant vigor resulting from air pollution abatement.

FHM Working Group Meetings
The annual FHM Working Group Meeting is held in late January or early February and is open to all FHM partners. The meeting provides a forum for open discussion on important forest health issues and provides opportunities for FHM partners to make specific recommendations to the FHM National Program Manager and management team on program development and implementation.
