The UniProt consortium is pleased to announce that all the currently
known human protein-coding genes are included in the latest release of
UniProt/SwissProt (Release 56.1). This represents 20,325 manually
annotated entries. Alternative splicing, alternative promoter usage
and/or alternative translation initiation increases this number to
approximately 34,000 human protein sequences held in the database
