Blacks in

Humankind had its beginnings in Africa and the man many consider
to be the first scientist, Imhotep (3000 BC), was an Egyptian
of the African continent, and may have been a man of color. While
the contributions of Blacks to science and invention throughout
history are many, their stories are often little known. The vibrant
Black cultures in Africa that predated slavery made great strides
in folk medicine, and in this country, Blacks have made many significant
contributions to the advancement of science and technology. Recognition
of these contributions and opportunities to make them have increased
for Blacks since World War II. This literature guide, an update
of TB 85-5, includes the accomplishments of Blacks in science,
invention, architecture, engineering, medicine, photography, the
military, and related fields. It is not all-inclusive, although
effort has been made to list some basic books in most areas. It
is of necessity biographical in content. Not meant to be a comprehensive
bibliography, it is designed--as the name of the series implies--to
put the reader "on target."

Please note that prior to 1976 the Library of Congress
used the subject heading "Negroes" to refer to all persons
of African descent. In 1976 the term "Negroes" was discontinued
and the subject headings "Afro-Americans" and "Blacks"
were added to refer to persons of African descent within and outside
the United States respectively, but the cataloging of pre-1976 books
was not changed; books published prior to 1976 were not recataloged.
